Hey guys! I am here to share all of my tips + tricks on a successful move. I am no professional, but after these past few moves I have super simple ways to make everything go smoothly. As you all know, at the beginning of 2021 my husband and I made the move from North Carolina back down to Texas. Moving can be stressful enough, so here are the ways I keep my cool when it comes to preparing for moving.
1.De-Clutter Your Home
Okay, so this may seem simple but really taking a look around the house and seeing what all you really need, what you have multiples of, etc. I like to start with the most over-crowded area of the house, and by no surprise it usually is always my closet. I seriously am typically a hoarder of all of my clothing, and I had to start letting that “what if” scenario I kept coming up with in my head go. I take a look at things I have, and if I haven’t worn it in the last 6 months I pull it to the side. Once I am done evaluating my clothes, I then seperate out my stuff based off of what I could potentially sell, donate, or trash based off the conditions of my stuff. My favorite places for re-sell are Poshmark, Ebay, and also Plato’s Closet. Before this last move, honestly Poshmark was my best friend. It’s such a simple app to re-sell your gently used items, and it always makes me feel good knowing that the items I have barely used will get a second home! Any of the stuff that doesn’t sell, I will then take to donate. Most important thing here is to make sure you actually take it to donate, otherwise it will just continue to travel along with you as you move.
2. Pack Your Valuables
There is nothing like moving and your stuff shows up broken to your new home or doesn’t show up at all. I have learned if it is important to you, make sure to treat it that way. I like to travel with our pictures, important documents, and also any valuables that are not replaceable by money. I will also get together boxes of things that I want to ensure make it to the next spot safely. Because we know eventually we will move again, we like to save a few boxes from the previous moves to save on cost of boxes. If you don’t typically move around like us, you can check with bookstores, supermarkets, or office supply stores if they have any boxes you can have. I know from experience, but Target will give you a ton of boxes if you just go in and ask. Wine glasses, coffee pot, and our electronics(TV’s, sound bar, dvd players, etc.) are the main things we like to package up ourselves before the move. Let’s be real, the wine glasses and coffee pot are going to be used first thing when we get to the next location so I want to make sure to know what boxes they are in. Also, when you pack some of your own boxes this can help cut down on costs when getting a moving company.
3. Hire a Moving Company
Look around and find a quality but affordable moving company. The biggest lifesaver when coming to moving, is just to hire a moving company to leave it up to the professionals. Moving companies can get very pricey, so it is important to shop around and grab a few different quotes that are within your budget. If you live in Texas, one affordable and quality company is called Gameday Moving Services Houston.
They are a trusted company for residential and homeowners alike with trained professionals who are there to help with all of the bulky items such as; couch, bedroom furniture, kitchen table, etc. This Houston, TX long-distance moving company is there to really help you minimize the stress of worrying about your items beings damaged during the move. Although it may seem like it is a lot of money upfront for a moving company, in the end when you hire a moving company you can trust you know you won’t be replacing a lot of high dollar items after the move is all said and done.
I know these are very simple tricks, but they are really what have worked the best for me. One of my friends that I have made through all of this moving, is the main person who taught me on the importance of purging the house of all things un-needed for the next spot. It is such an AMAZING feeling when you just let go of things, and it definitely saves you time when un-packing at the next spot. It is so crazy, but 65% of moves happen between May and September, so I thought there was no better time than now to share with you guys tips to make it a little bit easier. Happy moving friends!
